The Future is Now!

This week I was honoured to be keynote speaker at my university residence (now UCR, previously known as Smuts Hall). UCR is the oldest men’s residence in the University of Cape Town steeped in 96 years of tradition. I reminisced about what student life was like before Uber, Instagram, iPhones & Tinder. My keynote? becoming futureproof.

I also had the privilege of spending time with iconic fashion designer, entrepreneur & philanthropist, Gavin Rajah. He generously shared his perspectives with me on how haute couture is shaping the future of active & lifestyle wear. High fashion meets bio-hacking. In an age of synthetic material clogged Shein-ifaction & blinding neon Lululemon athleisure - natural fabric innovation is incredibly refreshing.

There’s an interview with Jeff Bezos where he dismisses placing heavy reliance on the current Amazon stock price. “Today’s performance is a result of past work… the future depends on what we do today”.

We all know our future looks better if we start investing today, start healthier habits instantly & be more disciplined right now. The problem? We’re cemented in an age of instantaneous gratification, dopamine roulette & seemingly quick fixes. The explosion in cosmetic surgery, online shopping, betting platforms, dating apps, social media, fast food delivery services do more than just serve convenience - they starve our future selves from growth & authentic experiences.

Future success follows a non-linear path. Being successful is considerably more valuable than looking successful. It’s a marathon - not a sprint. True wealth is far less about how many physical things we accumulate. It’s about how many things we experience, the relationships we build & the quality time we enjoy.
